What is blue agave?
Agave tequilana Weber, blue variety is one of the 136 species of agave that grow in Mexico. Its distribution around the coutry is likely due to the migrations of ethnic groups that domesticated it during the course of centuries. The Swedish botanist Carl Linneaeus baptized the genus in 1753, taking the name from the Greek word meaning admirable or noble. The blue variety is used to produce tequila and is distinguished by the blue tinge of its leaves which grows in a roseate arrangements. When the agave matures , a very tall flower stalk known as the the qulotes rises from its center . Flowering brings the plant's life to an end.
